The town says lobby and medicine-drop access is typically available on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A visitor should call 704-857-2129 before relying on those hours, especially when the purpose is to collect a report. The Landis lobby caveat affects access, not police coverage. A locked or unstaffed Landis door does not mean no officer is on duty. It does mean that an unplanned Landis records visit may fail. Email or phone confirmation can establish whether the Landis public copy is ready, whether the requester must be directly involved, and whether pickup must be in person.

That exception is tied to the issuing county's warrant. It does not mean every Landis arrest near the county line leaves Rowan.
If a Landis arrest does not appear in Rowan's current-inmate catalog, first confirm Landis release and timing. Then identify the warrant's issuing county and contact the appropriate detention office. A Landis-related online wanted entry can lag a change in status, so direct confirmation matters. Do not confront anyone based on a listing. The Landis Municipal Court File
Landis does not operate a separate municipal criminal court. Ordinance, traffic, misdemeanor, and felony charges enter North Carolina's General Court of Justice through Rowan County. District Court ordinarily handles misdemeanors and preliminary felony matters. Superior Court handles felony trials after indictment or another proper jurisdictional basis. The criminal file is kept by the Rowan Clerk in Salisbury, not by a Landis city-court clerk.

Landis Police Records and Town History
Landis incorporated on March 7, 1901 after a farming settlement grew with the railroad and an 1899 cotton mill. The town's official history says its name may refer to Kenesaw Mountain Landis or to a phrase about the value of land. These accounts are local history, not criminal-history data, but they explain why rail, mill, and civic landmarks often frame older Landis records.
The Old Post Office, Old Jail, and railroad depot remain part of the town's preserved civic landscape at Passive Park on land associated with the D.C. Linn estate. Later timeline points include electric power in 1917, a community foundation in 1970, the gazebo in 1991, the town clock in 1993, Lake Corriher Wilderness Park in 2018, and a mural in 2021. Historic use of the Old Jail should not be confused with today's custody system. Current Landis arrestees generally move to Rowan detention, with the documented Cabarrus-warrant exception. Modern criminal court records remain with Rowan County.
Landis Record Access Rules
North Carolina Public Records Law applies to records held by Landis and Rowan County, but release depends on the record category. A police investigative file is not open in the same way as a Clerk court file. Listed arrest and complaint information may remain public even when a full narrative is withheld. Juvenile records, protected victim information, confidential identifiers, expunged matters, and sensitive evidence stay restricted.
